ICANN has recently posted an Interview with ICANN Chief Security Officer, Jeff Moss, about the the glitch responsible for taking the TLD Application System (TAS) offline nearly two weeks ago.

According to the interview, ICANN is taking an extremely cautious approach in getting the system back online.

Jeff Moss stated that ICANN will be able to identify the affected applicants with with significant accuracy. Check out the video above or read through the FAQ for more details.

During a Pre-Internet Week 2011 event held in the Akihabara (a.k.a. Electric Town) Tokyo, JPNIC sponsored an ICANN New gTLD Outreach session which featured Kuo-Wei Wu of the ICANN board.

Mr. Wu is a very candid speaker and did a wonderful job with his presentation.  But considering the lack of materials in Japanese, I fear that this could be the only public outreach session we get.  Hopefully this is not the case.

ICANN has published a new site for New gTLD Applicants in an effort to ramp up it's four month communication outreach before applications are accepted in January 2012.

Prospective applicants can browse FAQ's, program materials, presentations, and receive the latest news about the launch of the application process.  The site also features some very interesting videos.

Wed, 29 Jun 2011 17:05:00 -0700 Is ICANN Ready to Implement the New gTLD Program? http://urbanbrain.posterous.com/is-icann-ready-for-new-gtld-implementation http://urbanbrain.posterous.com/is-icann-ready-for-new-gtld-implementation

Is ICANN ready for the implementation of New gTLDs? According to ICANN CEO, Rod Beckstrom, and newly appointed Chairman of the ICANN Board, Stephen Crocker, YES!

When asked if ICANN was ready, Beckstrom responded with a resoundingly confident "sure."  Beckstrom followed with;

We have built an excellent executive management team. We have been preparing for this moment for years as an organization; certainly all two years since I have been here. The program has already been under development so, software systems, management teams, still a lot of work to do and, you know, it is a tight schedule. We are ready to move along with the program so long as we keep it as we’ve defined it and don’t start changing and expanding the scope.

What is Beckstrom's single greatest fear in properly implementing the program?

The natural pressure from this community is always to iterate, change and refine and so we are going to have to resist that temptation while we execute the first round.

When asked how many applications ICANN expects, Rod stated that they do not speculate or tally, rather, their job is just to be prepared to "handle the applications in an orderly and professionally fashion to protect the security and stability of the root of the Internet."

Tue, 21 Jun 2011 12:51:00 -0700 Neustar to Establish its Own Brand-Specific Generic Top-Level Domain http://urbanbrain.posterous.com/neustar-to-establish-its-own-brand-specific-g http://urbanbrain.posterous.com/neustar-to-establish-its-own-brand-specific-g

“Having a brand-specific gTLD gives companies an infinite universe of branded domains that can be used to promote products and services"

ICANN made good on its promise to approve the New gTLD Program and set forth a firm timeline for its implementation on Monday (6/20). Following that announcement our backend provider for .SiTE and .Brand TLDs, Neustar, announced that it would apply for the ".NEUSTAR" brand top-level domain.

This is only the third such announcement from a brand, following the announcement of “.Canon” last year and “.Hitachi” earlier this year.

The release states:

“the .NEUSTAR brand-specific gTLD will provide Neustar with an opportunity to further promote its brand, products and services by owning both sides of the dot, ultimately bolstering its online presence and brand visibility.”

We teamed up with Neustar in order to provide companies with the best overall solution for .brand TLDs. Neustar's technical expertise, experience, professionalism, and ability to meet the needs of corporate clients is unmatched in the TLD arena and we are proud to see that they will also be applying for a “.brand” and become part of the Internet revolution.

Thu, 16 Jun 2011 17:53:00 -0700 Japan's First Official GeoTLD Announcement: ".Ryukyu", ".Okinawa" http://urbanbrain.posterous.com/japans-first-geotld-announcement-ryukyu-okina http://urbanbrain.posterous.com/japans-first-geotld-announcement-ryukyu-okina

CEO of Business Ralliart Inc., Nakanishi Tohshiyuki, announced his intention of applying for “.Ryukyu” and “.Okinawa”.

In an article published by the Okinawa Times, Nakanishi states that the announcement of the TLDs will have significant meaning for Okinawa as a leader in the advancement of IT in Japan. The projects will be used to promote and strengthen the brand and image of Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands. According to the article, the project has attracted investment from Nippon Rent-A-Car Okinawa and EN Group, a well known Japanese and Okinawan restaurant chain.

Tue, 07 Jun 2011 10:38:00 -0700 6Connect.net: IPv6 for the Non-Techie http://urbanbrain.posterous.com/6connectnet-ipv6-for-the-non-techie http://urbanbrain.posterous.com/6connectnet-ipv6-for-the-non-techie

As we continue preparing for .SiTE for the new gTLD application round and speak with other brands and entrepreneurs about applying for a new top-level domains, questions about IPv6 often arise. Will .SiTE be IPv6 ready? Can your back-end provider handle IPv6, etc.?

6Connect.net produced a wonderfully simplistic explanation of transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6. It’s well worth the read for non-techies.

Here is a little excerpt.

At the end of the day, the biggest and most noticeable difference between IPv4 and IPv6 are the actual IP Addresses being used. IPv4 had a 32-bit string of numbers that often looked like the following:

202.127.212.134.

This “address” was a part of a pool of addresses managed by IANA as described earlier. As this address pool has been depleted, all new requests for addresses will only be able to get a v6 address. IPv6 addresses are quite a bit more complex – they are 128-bit addresses:

3ffe:1900:4545:3:200:f8ff:fe21:67cf.

Applicant_guidebook

Well, there you have it. There is no "Draft" in that title.  However, there is no "Final" in it either.  Either way the Applicant Guidebook is here!

As the title page states:

The Guidebook is for consideration and not yet approved. The proposed details of the New gTLD Program remain subject to further consultation and revision.

So is it true; are we really that close to seeing the launch of New gTLDs in 2011?

I thought so after the San Francisco ICANN meeting, and I'd be lying if I say I remained totally optimistic from San Francisco until now. But I've got to give credit to ICANN for keeping with their commitment to launch the program this year.

I will post my initial thoughts on the guidebook on our blog as soon as I can get through it.

Em-regional

Here are a few tidbits of information from the European Regional Registry/Registrar meeting held earlier this month.

Below is picture of things that still need to be done in order for ICANN to be prepared to handle New gTLD Applications.

Operational_readiness

  • A simulation of application processing has not been completed yet but ICANN will get this done in Q3. (I sort of thought that this would have been done at this stage.)
  • TAS is still not complete (TAS = TLD Application System).  ICANN is targeting 3Q 2011 for completion.  (TAS was one of the first New TLD acronyms I learned...back in 2008!

Here is the status update which was presented at the European Registry/Registrar event.

VeriSign has released its 2011 first quarter domain report.  According to the report the total domain count across all TLDs had crossed 209 million mark.  The first quarter of 2011 saw an increase of 4.5 million domains.

It appears that there is a typo in the report as it lists an increase of 8.3 million registrations in the NET/COM zones.  Based on the numbers in the previous report, I think this should be 3.3 million.

(I have asked VeriSign for confirmation on the numbers above)
